Great man on film

Lately I bought the Chaplin Collectors Box 2 on Amazon. It includes “Goldrush”, “The great Dictator” and “Limelight”. I only bought it because of The great Dictator, but the other two are fabulous as well. I am a fan of strange humor and so I had to come to Chaplin one day. I like “Modern Times”, “Goldrush” and “The great Dictator”... The little innocent tramp tapping from one strange situation into the next.

Should I loose any words on the film? Ok, I do…

Goldrush was a silent movie shot 1919 to caricature the time of the last goldrush in the United States. It is a film with no deep story. But it is a story about love and charity and about good and bad. The film lives from the slapstick of Charly Chaplin.

In The Great Dictator the tramp returns. It was filmed in 1938 until 1940. Chaplin aims at Hitler to disclose his doings in Europe. Chaplin is director, producer, writer and has the first role as Hynkel and the jewish barber. One fabulous role is the on of Jack Oakie as Napaloni. He greatly adopts Mussolinis gestures to his role. Chaplin was about one year faster than the history, because in 1939 Hitler attacked Poland. Chaplin said, that he would not have made this film, if he knew, what realy happened in Europe. A peace of filmhistory is the speach of Chaplin in the end beeing the jewish barber in the robe of Hinkel but speaking as Charles Chaplin to the audience.

Limelight is a hommage to the old times of filming. It was first shown in 1952. The film is about an ageing artist, has to give the torch away to the next generation. Once again the tramp appears, this time as the old man. Chaplin got his only regular Oscar for the filmmusic together with Raymond Rasch and Larry Russel.

This box spanns the evolution of the tramp in the years. Great filming! together with a special-dvd
